BEIRUT: Lebanon's Prime Minister Fouad Siniora called UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Sunday and demanded an emergency Security Council meeting after an Israeli air strike killed 40 civilians in south Lebanon.

A Siniora aide said the prime minister also asked Annan to seek an immediate ceasefire to end 19 days of Israeli attacks in Lebanon which the government says have killed up to 750 people, mostly civilians. Lebanon-based Hizbollah guerrillas have killed 51 Israelis in the war.
