VARANASI: As part of efforts to enhance railway security, Northern Railway has decided to use the 'red army' of coolies as intelligence agents on Lucknow and Varanasi railway stations.

Interacting with newspersons here at the Varanasi Cantt railway station on Friday, Divisional Railway Manager (Lucknow Division) RK Gupta said the ambitious Coolie Mitra Yojna, enforced at New Delhi railway station, will be put in place at Lucknow and Varanasi railway stations.

''The ambitious project envisages using coolies as intelligence agents on the station premises to further streamline railway security network,'' Gupta added.

As the coolies keep track on every person entering and leaving station premises, using them as intelligence agents will prove to be vital.

The DRM also interacted with some coolies and apprised them of the nut and bolts of the new system.

Gupta said as part of preparations for stepping up security at the Varanasi and Lucknow railway station, hand held metal detectors have been provided to Railway Protection Force personnel.

Installation of door metal detectors and x-ray machines, besides drafting of sniffer dogs in security at the two stations was also in the offing, he added.
