SRINAGAR: Militants on Wednesday went on a rampage and shot dead two cops and injured another in three different incidents across Srinagar city. Elsewhere, two militants including a top Lashkar-e-Tayiba ultra were killed in two separate encounters with security forces at Mendhar and Pulwama areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
 
Police said it started at 11.15 am at Telbal Bus stand near Hazratbal when militants fired at police constable Karamjit Singh from point blank range. He received serious injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.
 
Two hours later militants surfaced eight kilometres away at Soura and fired at a police constable deployed on guard duty of Jammu and Kashmir Bank. Constable Ghulam Rasool died on the spot.
 
Militants surfaced again near Biscoe School Lal Chowk and fired at police constable Mohammad Ramzan.
 
He was injured and removed to hospital where he was operated upon. Ramzan was posted with District Police Lines Srinagar.
 
Jasih-e-Mohommad has claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesman of the outfit called up local news agencies and staked claim for the attacks.
Deputy Inspector general of police, central Kashmir range, Farooq Ahmad said militants chose crowded places to hit policemen so that they could manage to escape from the scene.
 
In a separate incident, the army killed a top commander of Lashkar-e-Tioba militant Abu Osama Aritop Mendhar in Poonch district of Jammu region. Colonel Dinesh K Badola said the encounter broke out after the army cordoned off the place to hunt down the ultras.
 
He said Osama's group was involved in the recent attack on police station on Gursai in which police constable had died.
