ATS looks for two locals who had gone to Pak for training in bomb-making
MUMBAI: The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), probing the July 11 blasts, have launched a manhunt to find out the whereabouts of two Bhiwandi youngsters, who had allegedly gone to Pakistan to train in explosives.
Aged between 18 and 21, both (named as Shahid Ali) returned from Pakistan in April after completing a 25-day training in making bombs from easily available material such as ammonium nitrate.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Special Task Force) Rajesh Pandey said, “We had compiled the information about them and sent the dossier to ATS to trace the accused.” The information was given after ATS questioned an Imam arrested from the Phoolpur district in Uttar Pradesh, an alleged conspirator of the Varanasi blast.
Physical descriptions and other information gathered during the investigation of the Varanasi’s Sankat Mochan temple bomb blast was sent to ATS in April 2006 by the Uttar Pradesh STF.
When the STF team had gone to the address given by the Imam, they learnt that the duo no longer stayed there.
The duo used to stay in a rented house in Bhiwandi. One of them worked with a garment dealer and lived in Jamiyat Nagar and other used to work in a powerloom factory and lived in Gayibi Nagar.
A senior STF official said, “The duo was selected by 24-year-old Bangladeshi Mehboob Ali who had spent more than seven months in Thane and Mumbai.” He said Ali used to go to mosques in Bhiwandi from where he picked out the two for training in Pakistan. Sources said they were taken to Pakistan via Dhaka. Sources said the duo told their parents that they are going for Ijtema, a religious discourse and will be back within a month.
