BHOPAL: Former deputy prime minister LK Advani on Sunday likened the Mumbai serial blasts to the 9/11 attack on America in 2001. “It is not an attack only on Mumbai but the entire nation,” Advani said, while addressing a BJP-sponsored public rally against terrorism in Bhopal.

He said that India must react to the situation the way the US had reacted following attack on the twin towers in New York. “This is not just another attack by terrorists trained across the border but is an attack on India,” Advani said.

He hit out at the UPA government and said that the Congress-led government was dealing with terrorists with kid gloves and the series of attacks from across the border in the past two years bear testimony to this.

Reiterating his party’s stand that POTA withdrawal was a big mistake on the part of the UPA government, the BJP leader said that if the UPA government moves to bring back POTA in the interest of the country, the BJP would back the UPA.

Repeatedly naming Pakistan in his hard-hitting speech, Advani said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh must try to win global support against Pakistan in the ongoing G-8 nations’ summit and compel America and other countries to take stern steps against Pakistan like the US did against Iran.

Advani said that the Manmohan Singh government was working under undue pressure of the Left parties and against the interests of the nation. “All-out efforts are needed to finish the terror factories run in Pakistan,” he said.

Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi also underlined the need to expose the design of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. “Attacks on Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai were part of a design to weaken India,” Joshi said, launching a blistering attack on Pakistan while seeking to declare Pakistan a rogue state.
