Italian carmaker launches Gallardo and Murcielago models in the country.

NEW DELHI: India beckons luxury carmakers. And it looks like an irresistible calling. They are arriving in droves, and in good shape. After the Bentleys and the BMWs, it is the turn of Italian sports car brand Lamborghini to turn up. It has launched two models to begin with - Gallardo and Murcielago.

While a Gallardo convertible will cost you Rs 1.65 crore, Gallardo Spyder comes for Rs 1.8 crore and  Murcielago for Rs 3 crore.

The company says it has sold six cars even before its Indian debut and is targeting sale of 10 more units of the two models this year. Says Stephen Winklemann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A: “India is now ready for the advent of the best that Italian motoring has to offer ...  these models exude the passion and power of an unbridled young bull.”

Exclusive Motors, which is also the dealer for Bentley cars in India, will be distributing these Lamborghinis in the entire sub-continent.

The Italian car maker has seen a huge spurt in sales over the past three years.

Typically, Lamborghini used to sell just about 250 cars a year for well over 40 years.

But over the past three years, sales have crossed the 1,000 mark and reached 1,600 in 2005. This year, the company is expecting sales to touch the 1,900 unit mark.

Lamborghini says each of its cars is handmade and more of a collector’s item than a vehicle meant for commuting.

Asked whether the presence of equally worthy and luxurious rivals could pose a competition to the company’s sales, Winkelmann said: “We have a brand following and in any case, our customers do not go for one car.

“They have many big ones up their driveways and would sure like to add a sports car like Lamborghini.”

Winkelmann said apart from India, the company is also focusing on China and Russia.
