“This year the club is looking for people in every position, trying to establish some balance, so that Real is not just six names who sell lots of shirts and don’t win anything,” Guti said on Thursday. “You don’t need to look any further than the World Cup where everyone thought Brazil were the favourites but Italy went on to win playing as a team.”
Ramon Calderon was elected president two weeks ago and has publicly distanced himself from the policies pursued by Florentino Perez, who quit in February after six years at the helm.
Perez became well known for spending millions on high-profile players such as Zidane, Ronaldo and Beckham, regardless of whether the squad needed players in their particular positions. He stepped down as the club headed towards their third successive season without a major trophy, their worst run of form in more than 50 years.
“We have a new type of president, who operates behind the scenes, leaving the responsibility for sporting matters to people who know what they are doing,” Guti added. During Real’s presidential election campaign Calderon said AC Milan’s Kaka, Chelsea winger Arjen Robben and Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas were his key targets. However, resistance from these players’ clubs and the arrival of Juventus boss Fabio Capello have seen attention switch to Cannavaro, Zambrotta and Emerson.
