The Shiv Sena on Saturday served an ultimatum: those responsible for the violence in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi be arrested within 48 hours.

Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray told reporters at the party headquarters Shivalaya that “anti-national elements are at work in Bhiwandi. It is time they are stopped from pursuing their nefarious activities.”

Uddhav said two policemen had been killed by the rampaging mob. “The state government has no money to give to farmers committing suicide. But it has offered compensation to the families of those killed in the Bhiwandi firing. This is a crying shame. ‘Kill a cop and get compensation’, that seems to be the state policy,” Uddhav said.

Assuring that the Sena would help the families of the two constables killed in the mob attack, Uddhav said, “My party will not tolerate such incidents in Maharashtra. If the state government does not arrest those who attacked the police, our party will arrest them. Let the government stop us from doing that. We believe that the whole thing was instigated by Abu Asim Azmi.”

Meanwhile, about 4,000 Shiv Sena workers took out a morcha in front of Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi’s Colaba residence on Saturday. A tight security ring was thrown around Azmi to prevent any untoward happening.

The Bhiwandi police made 13 arrests on Saturday. The arrested were produced at Bhiwandi court, which remanded them in police custody till July 12. Two policemen on patrol duty, head constable Ramesh Jagtap and constable BS Gangrude, had been killed on the night of July 5 by an agitating mob near Milan Hotel in Bhiwandi. The agitators stoned and stabbed the policemen, and set them on fire. Meanwhile, the Crime Branch has been given the charge of probing the violence.
