Navin Hiranandani was an introvert; he lost this year’s ENT association’s elections.

The building in which Navin Hiranandani lived and then killed himself on Thursday night was called Kanta.

It was named for his mother and was the first building made by his father, Lakhumal Hiranandani, in 1961. “It’s a sad twist of fate,” said an observer on Friday morning.

Unlike his two high-profile younger brothers, Niranjan and Surendra who went into the construction industry, Navin was an introvert.

The ear, nose and throat specialist, say relatives and family friends “was without ambition”.

He also suffered from depression. The police are looking to the fact that he contested and lost at this year’s ENT association’s elections.

Navin retired from BMC’s Sion hospital six years ago. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, he was much older than his brothers. He is survived by his wife Sunita and son Sanjay, who in the US.

The doctor’s psychiatric history will be investigated by the police, in case it has any bearing on his suicide. Since the doctor was asthmatic, he and his wife had separate bedrooms.

He was found by the maid servant on Friday morning, lying in a pool of blood, having apparently cut a vein in his right arm with a surgical knife.

Kanta building was inundated by the print and electronic media all of Friday. However, building security was tight and only relatives and friends were allowed inside. No one was willing to speak to the media.
