MUMBAI: Zaheera Shaikh, undergoing conviction for contempt of court in a Nasik jail, has become a workaholic and taken up sewing and embroidery to keep herself occupied, according to her lawyer Umesh Deshpande.

"Zaheera does not want to spend her time gossipping in jail with fellow prisoners but wants to do something worthwhile," Deshpande said.

Earlier, when she was lodged in a Mumbai jail, she had taken up computer classes and an English language course but could not complete them as she was shifted to Nasik, he said.

As soon as she was brought to Nasik jail, Zaheera approached the jailor and sought his permission to work. She was asked to take up sewing and embroidery which readily agreed to.

"Today, Zaheera is a happy person", said Deshpande, who visited Nasik jail to meet her, recently.

The jail staff is also happy with her rekindling hopes of her early release because if an accused behaves well he or she earns holidays which ultimately lead to remission of sentence, Deshpande told PTI.

Zaheera was sentenced to a year's imprisonment by the Supreme Court on the charge of contempt. After completing this sentence, she had to undergo three months' rigorous imprisonment on another charge of giving false evidence in the Best bakery case.

The second sentence was imposed on her by a sessions court recently.
