NEW DELHI: Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal on Saturday resigned as Pradesh Congress Committee chief in protest against the "raw deal" meted out to followers in the committee reconstituted a week ago by the All-India Congress Committee.

The resignation letter was faxed to party president Sonia Gandhi at her official 10 Janpath residence.

The action by the ageing leader came at the end of a week of efforts to meet Gandhi to express his displeasure over the reconstituted PCC in Haryana where the state Congress is wracked by factionalism with Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Lal on rival sides.

Lal’s faction was very upset with the cold-shouldering by Gandhi of the three-time chief minister who could not secure an appointment with her for one week.

Lal was unhappy with the manner in which the party slapped a show-cause notice on his son for his criticism of the style of functioning of the Hooda government, besides his humiliation.

The factionalism in the Haryana Congress touched a crescendo following the election of Bhajan Lal's arch-rival Bhupinder Singh Hooda as chief minister about 20 months ago, rejecting his claim for the post for the fourth time.

Things worsened when a Hooda supporter, Dr Ram Prakash, was appointed working president.

In a bid to strike a balance, the Congress High Command had appointed Bhajan Lal's son as deputy chief minister. But this did not satisfy the Bhajan camp as his son was not given any important portfolio.

It is not known if the party high command will accept his resignation and what will be his action in the event of the party accepting his papers.
