CHENNAI: The LTTE was making contradictory statements on the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and its stand on the issue was not clear, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said here on Friday.

"The chief negotiator of LTTE, Anton Balasingham's, remarks on the issue is not clear. He himself had changed whatever he said in a television interview," he told reporters.

Balasingham, in the interview, said killing of Rajiv Gandhi was "a monumental historical tragedy which we deeply regret." However, LTTE's political wing Chief Tamilselvan, in another interview, denied that it had owned responsibility for the killing.

Karunanidhi said the Centre has already expressed its opinion on the issue.

Asked about reports alleging that MDMK general secretary Vaiko had recently met some Tamil militants in Kerala, Karunanidhi said he was unaware of any such meeting.

Meanwhile, state Director General of Police D Mukherjee in a statement here, said the police had adequate mechanisms to screen refugees arriving in the state and those belonging to any militant group or trained by any militant group are "identified and lodged in the special camp."
