LONDON: Prince Charles's private income rose to 14 million pounds ($25.6 million) last year, lifted by investments and rent rises on his country estates, his office said on Monday.

The heir to the throne's income was up six per cent on the year before, according to his annual accounts.

The Duchy of Cornwall estate, which provides the prince's private income, was created in 1337 by Edward III to support his eldest son, the Black Prince.

Income from the estate was boosted last year by rises in commercial property rent and investment income.    Charles paid 3.3 million pounds in tax, slightly more than the year before.

He helped to raise more than 100 million pounds for charity and undertook 642 official engagements.
