SRINAGAR: Two former Jammu and Kashmir ministers were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in a sex scandal that has rocked the state for over a month.

Ghulam Ahmed Mir, a senior Congress leader and former state works minister, was arrested by the CBI in New Delhi on Tuesday. Mir, a sitting legislator, had been evading arrest after his name figured in the scandal. He had also been nominated by the Congress Election Committee as polling agent for party president Sonia Gandhi in Rae Bareli.

The CBI also arrested Raman Mattoo, a sitting MLA and former minister of state for industries, from his posh Gupkar Road residence here. “He will be questioned and subjected to an identification parade,” said an official.

Deputy Inspector General of CBI Pankaj Kumar said the leaders had been arrested on the basis of statements made by a 15-year-old victim as well as the alleged kingpin of the racket, Sabeena.

The CBI action comes a day after the J&K high court asked the agency to vigorously investigate the persons named by Sabeena.

Leader of the radical Dukhataran-e-Milat, Asiya Andrabi, welcomed the arrest. “We know there are several bigwigs in the case who are being shielded. But at least some action has been taken,” she said.

The number of people arrested in the case so far is 11. Nine persons including Sabeena and Deputy Inspector General of the BSF K S Padhi had earlier been arrested by the CBI and the local police for allegedly raping a minor girl.

A minor girl Yasmeena had made shocking revelations of sexual abuse involving as many as 56 influential people including politicians, bureaucrats, police officers and businessmen.

The CBI has declared the former J&K additional advocate general, Anil Sethi, a proclaimed offender after he went underground following rejection of his bail application by the Supreme Court.
