NEW DELHI: Nokia Oyj, the world’s top mobile phones firm, has decided to shift its global network management services business to India from July.

The Finnish company, which entered into a mega merger deal for its telecom equipment business with Siemens on Monday, creating the fourth largest firm of its kind with revenues of $19.9 billion, will compete with players such as HCL Comnet, Wipro Infotech, Datacraft and GTL in India.

Network management services in India constitute a Rs525 crore business that’s growing at 50 per cent annually. India’s telecom equipment market is worth Rs53,000 crore a year.

Although players such as Sony-Ericsson and Alcatel have interests in network management, they are seen more as equipment vendors.

Enterprise or network management is all about remotely managing a telecom network efficiently and economically. Major telecom service providers such as Bharti and Hutchison outsource it to experts, leaving them free to focus on the core telecom business.

For instance, Nokia will extend its service contract with Hutchison Essar to cover 19 of the operator’s 23 circles, according to company officials. Nokia’s earlier deal with Hutch was for nine circles. Over the past few years, Bharti has entered into managed services deals with IBM, Nokia, and Ericsson.

“The broader shift by the networks business group from a product to a solutions focus is gathering pace,” Bosco Novak, Nokia’s senior vice-president for services networks, said.

Nokia’s Global Networks Solutions Centre in Chennai will serve as the hub for the company’s international operations. The centre offers services such as remote care, and remote integration.
