NEW DELHI: India's nominee for UN Secretary General's post Shashi Tharoor on Monday foresaw a "reasonable prospect" of his success and said he was encouraged by the "solid support" of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the government.

"No race is guaranteed in terms of its outcome. We have to make an effort. We have to put forward our best credentials and we have to recognise that other candidates will also come forward, which is a good thing," he told reporters after a 30-minute meeting with Singh.

"Obviously, we would not be in this race if we didn't believe there was a reasonable prospect of success," said Tharoor who is on a three-day visit to discuss with Indian political leadership and Foreign Ministry officials to firm up the strategy to win the race for the coveted post.
