England coach Duncan Fletcher admitted he is in touch with Vaughan regularly as the Yorkshire batsman continues his recovery from a long-term knee injury.
It had been expected England would call-up a replacement for Middlesex batsman Ed Joyce after he injured an ankle in Thursday's Twenty20 defeat against Sri Lanka at the Rose Bowl.
But Fletcher confirmed that nobody would be drafted in, leaving the way clear for Vaughan to return during the five-match series with the Sri Lankans.
He said: "We're constantly in touch with Michael and I'll be ringing him again in the next day or so just as I rang him two days ago. It's all up to him. He's the individual who's got to say whether he's ready to play. We can't say he's ready to play, it's up to Michael to make that decision."
England are keen to bring Vaughan back into the fold as their form has suffered since he was forced to rest his injury during the winter tour to Pakistan and India.
They lost the opening match of the one-day series against Sri Lanka at Lord's on Saturday but Fletcher believes he is picking up valuable information about players who may feature in next year's World Cup in the West Indies.
He said: "The strategy is to have a look at a couple of players quickly now and establish the roles we want them to play in and whether they are capable of playing those roles.
"We're in a situation now where there's not a lot of games left (before the World Cup) and we'll have to make up our minds pretty soon."
