MADURAI: Tamil Nadu minister M K Stalin, son of chief minister M Karunanidhi, on Tuesday escaped unhurt when an unidentified man wielding a knife came close to him but was stopped in time by a CRPF jawan, who sustained injuries on his hand.

The man was in the crowd gathered at the railway station here to receive Stalin, the minister for local administration, and had been spotted by the constable escorting the minister, railway police sources told PTI.

The constable saw the man pointing the knife towards Stalin, the sources said, adding, that since the constable did not know Tamil he had problems communicating what exactly happened.

Official sources said the constable did not even realise  he was wounded when he seized the knife and is being currently treated for his injuries.

Meanwhile, police said they are yet to get a full picture of the incident.

"We are not in a position to say whether anyone attempted to stab the minister or assault him. Or whether the man was just carrying the knife for some other purpose," they said.
