WASHINGTON: The United States Supreme Court on Monday ruled that a convicted criminal sentenced to execution can challenge the legality of lethal injections used to carry out the death penalty.

The ruling came in the case of Clarence Hill, 47, who was sentenced to death in 1983 for the murder of a police officer during a bank robbery.

Hill had received a stay of execution shortly before he was due to be executed on January 24.

The court did not address whether the method of lethal injection violated the US constitution, but whether Hill had the legal right to challenge the method under civil rights laws.
