Trinidad celebrate World Cup debut

Supporters, who had watched the game in bars throughout the islands, ran into the streets as the referee's whistle blew after the last seconds of the game in Dortmund in Germany.

world cup fifa 2006PORT-OF-SPAIN: Trinidadians, more used to toasting record-breaking cricketer Brian Lara than their national football team, celebrated the 0-0 draw with Sweden on Saturday as the Soca Warriors made their World Cup debut.   

Supporters, who had watched the game in bars throughout the islands, ran into the streets as the referee's whistle blew after the last seconds of the game in Dortmund in Germany.   

One ecstatic female fan said: "I wasn't even thinking about. If they carry the same energy, the same spirit, the same drive this should carry them through."   

Alcohol was sold out in many stores, while local beer companies hosted World Cup parties at popular bars where giant TV screens were set up for supporters.   

Vehicles flew Trinidad and Tobago flags, while replica shirts with the names of skipper Dwight Yorke and fellow veteran, 'Little Magician', Russell Latapy were sold out.
