Car bomb kills 7, wounds 17 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD: A car bomb exploded in a Baghdad street on Thursday, killing seven people and wounding 17, police said.   

The blast occurred in the northwestern Shi'ite district of Kadhimiya, police said. No more details were immediately available.   

It took place on the same day as US and Iraqi officials announced that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al Qaeda leader in Iraq, had been killed in a US bombing raid on a village north of Baghdad on Wednesday.   

Zarqawi has been blamed for some of the bloodiest attacks in Iraq, including a campaign of bombings, beheadings and assassinations.   

US officials hailed the killing of Jordanian-born Zarqawi but have warned that his al Qaeda group still posed a threat.
