Umrigar shifted out of ICU

Former India skipper Polly Umrigar has been shifted out of the intensive care unit at Bombay Hospital where he was admitted four days ago for undergoing tests and chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

MUMBAI: Former India skipper Polly Umrigar has been shifted out of the intensive care unit at Bombay Hospital where he was admitted four days ago for undergoing tests and chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
 
The 80-year-old Umrigar is expected to remain in hospital for a few more days, a source close to him said.
    
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma is a type of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, a part of the body's immune system.
    
"The cancer has been detected at an early stage," the source added.
 
Umrigar played 59 Tests in a career spanning 14 years, between 1948 and 1962, scored 3631 runs as a solid middle order batsman, including 12 centuries, averaging over 42 per innings.
    
He later became a national selector, including a stint as the panel's chairman, national team manager, the Indian cricket board's technical committee-in-charge, curator at the Wankhede stadium besides being the executive secretary of the board in the 1980s.
