MUMBAI: Zaheera Shaikh, the victim-turned-accused in the Best bakery Case, has enrolled herself for computer classes in prison and has begun learning English, her counsel Umesh Deshpande said here on Wednesday.

When asked how Zahira Shaikh was spending her time in prison, Deshpande replied, ''Zaheera spends her time reading a small religious book, which she always carries with her.''

He said his client was disturbed due to the bad ambience in the Byculla Jail, particularly her inmates sharing her cell.

The Supreme Court, taking serious note of a false affidavit filed for the second time, sentenced Zaheera to one-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000, for turning hostile on several occasions during the case’s retrial.

Deshpande said Zaheera's extended family was being ostracised by neighbours. Posters and bills have been pasted around their home, advising people against any monetary help to them. He said there is an apathy and misinterpretation of the issue.

''I will do my best to help Zaheera and her family legally. I would also like her to stand on her feet and lead a peaceful life,'' Deshpande added.
