NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra connection doesn’t seem to be working for Rahul Mahajan, who was arrested on Monday evening and now faces the possibility of spending upto twenty years in jail for his dalliance with drugs.

Ever since he collapsed after a drug overdose on Thursday night, his family and friends of his father have been trying to work the powerful Maharashtra clique in the union government to bail Rahul out, but with little success. A government source who did not want to be identified revealed that instructions had gone to ministers from Maharashtra who were known to be friendly with Pramod Mahajan, to stay off the case and let the police do their job.

Gopinath Munde first appealed to Home Minister Shivraj Patil whom he met on Friday. He got little joy from Patil except an assurance that the investigation would be fair. With the police going hell for leather with the investigations, Munde is believed to have tried to play Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde next. Sources said Shinde has evaded meeting him.

Munde is now said to be pushing for a second meeting with Patil. A Maharashtra politician said that a feeling of regional brotherhood usually compels them to help each other out across party lines. However, the Mahajan case is under too much media scrutiny for the Congress or NCP to intervene on Rahul’s behalf.

The government source said Patil chaired a meeting of top Delhi Police officers on Saturday where he told them to investigate the case freely. If there is a conspiracy angle, go ahead and pursue it, they were told. If it’s a case of drug overdose, let the law take its course, went the instructions. Police investigations so far have not confirmed the conspiracy theory. A police source said the case seems to be one of a drug overdose gone terribly wrong.
