NEW DELHI: Confusion persists over the drug that was consumed at the Mahajan residence on Thursday night. Apollo Hospital on Sunday reported traces of cocaine and opiates. But according to police sources, forensic reports have revealed traces of heroin and thalium.

The sources said the viscera examination on Moitra and tests on a sample of the stomach wash conducted on Rahul at Apollo Hospital on Thursday night showed the same two drugs. Thalium is used widely to adulterate cocaine. So far, the forensic examination has not revealed any trace of cocaine. These tests are being conducted at the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory in Delhi. Apollo Hospital’s findings are based on tests conducted on urine and blood samples collected from Rahul Mahajan after he was admitted in an unconscious condition.  According to doctors, a combination of alcohol with heroin is a lethal one and can lead to a respiratory collapse. Explains Dr Anoop Mishra, senior consultant, internal medicine, Fortis, “With alcohol and heroin together the central respiratory drive decreases drastically ultimately stopping respiration.”

In this case, Mishra suspects it is a combination of drugs that led to the duo’s illness.

Experts say the administering of intravenous fluids could have reduced the levels of intoxicants in Rahul Mahajan's blood and urine samples, especially in the quantitative tests done at Apollo Hospital, because the concentration of any drug would vary according to the volume of fluid in the body. "As a protocol, all the tests should be done without the effect of any medication and treatment," said a pathologist.
