Seeks CBI inquiry into MMRDA housing for project-affected people.

On the heels of the news of Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Johny Joseph's transfer as chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust became known, rumours about Mumbai's other prominent bureaucrat T Chandrashekar, metropolitan commissioner (additional charge), started doing the rounds. In his case it is his "style of functioning" which is the problem.

Gurudas Kamat, city Congress chief, has made a second attack on Chandrashekhar. Kamat has written to the Prime Minister seeking a CBI inquiry into the poor quality houses provided by the MMRDA for project-affected people (PAPs).

The rage against the IAS officer crosses party lines. The Shiv Sena has planned a morcha against him on Monday for shoddy work on the two highways. The Samajwadi party has already had a morcha against the MMRDA's rehabilitation policies. Chandrashekhar, once the darling of the media and Thane, also got on the wrong side of deputy chief minister RR Patil and Guardian Minister of Mumbai (suburbs) Chandrakant Handore in a recent Cabinet meeting.

Chandrashekhar, however, said, "The allegations are baseless and let him (Kamat) bring proof for even one case. These townships are built by reputed builders and sanctioned by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). I'm not bothered. I will face the challenge." He pointed out that allotments were done as per the Collector's survey. "We resettled people as per the eligibility criteria. If he (Kamat) shows us single case of corruption, we will take action against the concerned officer." he explained. Rumours of his transfer, he said, "make no difference to me."

On his part, Kamat is adamant: "I have the proof and will show it soon. The MMRDA is looting Mumbai by employing a coterie of contractors who have built sub-standard buildings for poor. The houses in Mandala-Mankhurd are so bad, they do not even get an inch of light. No wonder PAPs have refused to move in. Further, they have violated the slum act by ignoring 3,000 residents of Tunga to rehouse Mithi river PAPs."

Kamat said he had asked Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh to transfer Chandrashekhar.
