Private institutions to move court against 69 per cent reservation Bill.

CHENNAI: Another quota clash appears imminent, this time in Tamil Nadu, following the state government's decision to make 69 per cent reservation for backward classes mandatory in private educational institutions.

The Tamil Nadu chapter of the All India Medical and Engineering Colleges' Association (AIMECA) has decided to move the court against the Reservation Bill introduced in the Assembly on Wednesday. "We cannot allow this Bill to be implemented. It will lead to total collapse of the education system. We will move the court for a stay," AIMECA president TD Naidu told DNA.

Even as the Supreme Court was trying to rein in striking medicos who were protesting the 27 per cent reservation in institutions of higher education, the Karunanidhi government passed the Bill on the last day of the first session of the Assembly. As against the Supreme

Court directive of 50 per cent reservation (Mandal judgement), Tamil Nadu already has 69 per cent quota in government and aided colleges. The private colleges, especially the self-financing engineering colleges, in the state are concerned that they will not be able to fill all the seats under the apportioning regime. The move could also eat into their income. Tamil Nadu has 240 private engineering colleges with an annual intake of more than 70,000 students.

Students, too, are concerned. Says T Philip, a private engineering college student: "I had to pay Rs 2 lakh as donation, apart from the about Rs 50,000 fees per semester to secure a seat for my preferred course. What's worse is that, I secured good marks and yet had to shell out this whopping sum. This is only because I don't belong to a backward caste. The Bill will make merit void."
