PARIS: World number one Amelie Mauresmo passed her first test en route to the French Open crown when she defeated Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Montenegro 6-3 6-3 to reach the fourth round at Roland Garros on Friday.

The Frenchwoman, who broke her Grand Slam jinx by winning the Australian Open in January, responded strongly when challenged by the world number 32, saving nine break points.

The centre court's darling started brightly and capitalised on two early breaks to claim the first set.

Jankovic went down on one knee when Mauresmo broke her for 3-2 with a forehand winner and capitulated after 80 minutes.

Mauresmo will meet either qualifier and compatriot Aravane Rezai or 16th Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic for a quarterfinal place.
