HONG KONG: Christie’s Hong Kong held its Asian Contemporary Art Spring sale on 28 May 2006, achieving an astonishing total of US$11,302,928.

Amongst 163 lots offered, an exceptional selection of 20 works by 11 Indian and two  Pakistani artists in the sale fetched in excess of US$936,400. Numerous world auction records for the artists — including whose works that are offered in international auction for the first time — were set in the sale.

Yamini Mehta, specialist, Head of Modern and Contemporary Indian Art, Christie’s said, “This successful sale marked the first time that Indian and Pakistani artists were encompassed in the international context of an Asian contemporary art auction. We are delighted by the 100 per cent sold result of these 20 exceptional works. Bidding in the packed saleroom and on telephone was fierce with notable cross-bidding and buying from all over the world.”
