CHANDIGARH: Intense heat wave gripped north India on Sunday, with mercury climbing to 46°C in Hisar in Haryana.

 

The second highest temperature recorded was in Amritsar in Punjab, where mercury touched 43.7°C. Ludhiana and Patiala in the state reeled under 40.2°C and 38.4°C respectively, the Meteorological Department informed.

 

Delhi too had a hot day, with the maximum day time temperature settling at 40.3°C. Sweltering conditions prevailed in Jammu with the maximum touching 41.4°C.

 

In Haryana, Ambala and Karnal recorded maximums of 37.2°C and 36.7°C respectively. Chandigarh had a maximum of 38°C.

 

While the rest of the north sizzled, Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, Shimla and Kalpa in Himachal experienced a pleasant day, recording respective highs of 29.2°C, 27.5°C and 23.8°C.
