With Rs4000 cr in its kitty, the government plans to go beyond creating more seats

NEW DELHI: Thanks to the quota cry, some new educational institutions are on the cards now. Keeping in mind the demand for more seats in higher education, the government has decided to build more institutes.

PK Hota, health secretary, said that the Union Health Ministry has decided to build new medical institutions to create more seats for the MBBS and PG students. This will be over and above increasing seats in existing medical institutions under the central government.

“We are taking this opportunity to expand and to create more institutions so that a large number of students have an opportunity to attain a medical education. We have a huge budget of Rs4000 crore for this,” Hota told DNA.

According to estimates, at least 54 per cent more seats are required to accommodate the OBC students proportionately and maintain balance. Medical students are the worst hit by the 27 per cent quota move. Out of 6,500 available seats in post-graduate medical courses roughly 3,000 would no longer exist.

Meanwhile, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has also affirmed the possible creation of new institutes. The Finance Ministry has agreed to give Rs4,700 crore to the HRD ministry in this regard. Out of this, Rs2700 crore is for expansion of existing institutions such as IITs, and Rs2000 crore is for setting up new institutions over next five years.

It is estimated that every 10 years there is an increase of 15 per cent among students who pass out of senior secondary schools. HRD Ministry expects that this percentage would double in the next decade.
