SURAT: As Surat mourned the death of its four children in a terrorist attack in Srinagar on Thursday evening, parts of the city were gripped by tension when VHP activists tried to set ablaze a dargah.

The saffron brigade burnt an effigy of terrorists denouncing the attack. They also raised slogans criticising the Centre and the J&K government for failing to provide adequate security to tourists. Local VHP leaders, however, denied the role of the outfit’s workers.

Eye-witnesses said that around 50 to 60 VHP activists gathered at the busy Udhna Darwaza junction. Some VHP activists lifted the burning effigy, and attempted to throw it inside the Hazrat Baba Peer dargah, situated adjacent to the traffic police outpost. Luckily, it missed its mark and no damage was caused to the dargah.  No police personnel were present at the spot.

Witnesses said VHP workers left the scene immediately as police arrived. A local shopkeeper, who was an eyewitness, was prevented from speaking to the media by the police. As word spread, a large number of Muslims assembled at the spot. However, they were dispersed by the police.

When questioned regarding the absence of policemen, Salabatpura Police inspector V S Rabari said, “We did not have any prior information about the demonstration.”
