The court sentenced Kersi Maneckshaw Shroff to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment holding him guilty of raping his 15 year-old servant.
MUMBAI: The Additional Sessions court here on Wednesday sentenced 50-year-old Kandivli resident, Kersi Maneckshaw Shroff , to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 holding him guilty of raping his 15 year-old servant in 1992.
When the judge S S Joshi pronounced the verdict, Shroff's wife, a medical practitioner, expressed shock at the conviction and implored the judge to incarcerate her and her 20-year-old daughter along with Shroff.
After the verdict was delivered, Shroff – an IT professional, quietly sat signing cheques and making arrangements for his family's monthly expenses.
According to the prosecution the victim was a live-in maid with the Shroffs and their (then) seven-year-old daughter, at Shatabdi Housing Compound, Kandivli.
When Shroff's wife and daughter had left for vacation to Hyderabad, he seized the opportunity to rape the victim in October 1992.
The victim became pregnant. The Shroff family, including the wife, claims that they did not notice any signs of pregnancy.
However, in August 1993, the victim was going to see a doctor for severe stomach pain when she delivered a female child on the pavement at Kandivli.
The victim had narrated the incident to her father who had lodged a complaint with the police.
On inquiry the entire episode came into light and the police machinery was set in motion.
The baby girl died within three months of birth, and the victim is living with her father in Mumbai.
“Despite the passage of time, the evidence was perfect. Shroff was convicted on the testimony of the victim," said public prosecutor Usha Makasare.
"There was no sign of remorse from any member of the family," said Makasare.
