GENEVA: Lee Jong-wook, director-general of the World Health Organisation, was rushed to the hospital on Saturday and operated on for a blood clot in the brain, the United Nations agency announced.

Lee, 61, from South Korea, took ill in the afternoon after a work meeting and was sent to a hospital in Geneva where he underwent an operation.

WHO declined to comment on the surgery’s outcome.

"The operation has been over for four hours and he is recuperating," said agency spokeswoman Christine McNab, stressing that it was too early for doctors to give a prognosis.

Lee's operation came ahead of the WHO's annual assembly due to start on Monday, involving 100 health ministers.

McNab said Lee's absence would not prevent the meeting from proceeding normally.
