New Delhi: Hundreds of engineers, accountants, lawyers and other professionals joined medical students on Saturday in the Dilli Chalo rally, which started at Maulana Azad Medical College and ended at the Jantar Mantar.

But unlike political rallies, there was no sloganeering in the anti-quota rally; the participants just kept clapping all the way. They also formed a human chain and did not block roads.

“We do not want to inconvenience anybody. We are protesting silently to let it be known that we feel strongly against reservation,” said Shubham, a medical student.

The rally drew resident doctors from all hospitals, private practitioners, chartered accountants, IT executives under the forum Pukar, and students from JNU, Delhi University, Jamia Milia Islamia and even schools. Students had also come from institutes in other cities such as Varanasi, Patiala and Ahmedabad.

“Generally, parents tell their children not to attend rallies. But this time, we are here ourselves to fight reservations because the cause is just,” said SP Singh, who’s daughter studies at LHMC.

When the participants reached Parliament Street, they were treated to a barrage of Siddhuisms by BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu himself, who made plenty of snide remarks on Arjun Singh.

“It was a largely peaceful rally, with no untoward incidents whatsoever,” said DCP Anand Mohan. The rapid action force had been deployed as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, advertisements have been placed in newspapers for recruitment in government hospitals. The walk-in interviews are expected to start on Monday.
