Members criticise Delhi HC for committing "contempt" of Parliament.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Friday briefly over the demolition drive in Delhi as agitated members criticised the Delhi High Court ruling on the issue terming it as "contempt" of Parliament. The court had ordered to continue the demolition and sealing drive against illegal constructions in the capital despite a Bill passed by Parliament to provide a one-year moratorium.

The government assured the House that it will do everything possible, legally and constitutionally, to retrieve the situation. The adjournment followed heated debate between the leader of the house Pranab Mukherjee and Malhotra even after an assurance by the Defence Minister that all legal and constitutional measures would be taken to "retrieve" the situation.

JDU member Prabhunath Singh warned that the court verdict had set the stage for a confrontation between the legislature and the judiciary. CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said the President should be requested to expedite his assent to the bill to stop the demolitions. The matter was raised during Question Hour as members cutting across partylines said the court order on demolition disregarded legislation passed by Parliament and was awaiting Presidential assent, to provide for a one-year moratorium on demolitions.

Sharing the concerns voiced by the members, Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken said "within the ambit of law, we will try to do everything possible to stop demolitions and sealings". Mukherjee said though Parliament had passed a law it was yet to be assented to by the President before coming into force.
