12 monuments disappear, unauthorised construction affects 14 others
 
NEW DELHI: The historical monuments of Delhi face a threat from encroachment, with as many as 14 of the heritage structures beset with unauthorised construction.
 
Giving the information in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni said as of now there are 175 monuments or sites in the capital that have been declared as being of national importance, of which 14 have been encroached upon and 12 reported as missing.
 
Among the monuments that have been encroached upon are Qudasia Mosque, Tughlaqabad, Lothian Road Cemetery, portions of City Wall at Kashmere Gate, Tomb of Razia Sultan, Purana Qila, Sarai Shahji, Begumpuri Mosque, Sunehri Masjid near Red Fort, Arab ki Sarai, Lal Gumbad, Ancient Mosque in Palam and D’Eremao Cemetery.      
 
The 12 monuments reported to be missing are the Tomb of Captain McBarnett and others, tomb with three domes near the New Delhi railway station, Moti Gate of Sher Shah’s Delhi, Pool Chadar, Alipur Cemetery, Barakhamba Cemetery,  Nicholson Statue, site of Siege Battery, Inchla Wali Gumti, mound known as `Joga Bai’ and Shamsi Talab.
 
Soni said remedial action had been initiated to get the encroached area vacated and to remove unauthorised or illegal construction from within the prohibited or regulated area with the assistance of state authorities and police.
