MUMBAI: Police stations no longer wear the glum and dingy look. The Sion station has undergone a makeover. A renovation undertaken about 8 months ago has converted the police station into an amiable place. Cleanliness has become the top agenda of the station personnel.

“Clean surroundings have a positive effect on the mind and increases output levels. It’s a healthy feeling,” said Subhash Chutke, senior police inspector, Sion police station, which initiated the cleanliness drive. The clean surroundings have also inculcated a keen sense of discipline among cops.

“We try and ensure that the rooms are kept spick and span. We have taken the responsibility of maintaining the station. Clean surroundings create a better working environment,’’ said another police officer.

The gardener of the station is also all praise for the cleanliness consciousness among the cops.

“Time was when the rooms would be dingy. But after the renovation, everyone takes care not to spit around. I’m happy that everyone is keen on cleanliness,” said Jijabai Jadhav, who has been working at the police station for the last eight years.

Keeping in mind the fitness and betterment of his police team, Chutke even started a gymnasium on the station premises since February.

“Fitness helps in making the body and soul clean and clear. It adds to the feel-good factor,” he said. Since then, cops in the station regularly work out at the gym. In fact, the gymnasium is also open to the public free of cost.

Apart from the health, the lush-green trees- which were also planted by the cops-  in the police station’s compound ensure that the atmosphere remains cool and shady.

“Fresh air is a premium in Mumbai. After a hard day’s work, it’s nice to come back to a clean and airy place,” said Chutke.
