NASHIK: “The best wine grapes are grown in Nashik and that makes the wine produced here very unique,” says Kerry Damskey, an international wine maker who is known in four continents for his acuity and focus in brilliant winemaking.

Kerry Damskey is a consultant to a leading brand of wine in Nashik and was here for making the season’s wines.

“Nashik has the ‘terroir’ conditions-good climate, soil and other aspects required for grapes cultivation. Wine is made basically in vineyards and the wine maker is merely a midwife in the process of wine making,” he says.

Speaking about Nashik wine, Kerry points out that it has attracted many from the traditional wine countries as well.

“Initially it is the curiosity. Sommeliers ask, ‘Is Indian wine really possible?’ But seeing Indian brands on the wine list makes the difference. They realise that it has come here after lot of tasting and appreciation.

The second thing is that Nashik wine tastes good. It has its own taste and character that is appealing. And very importantly as compared to other world wines, it is less expensive so it has a value attraction too,” says Kerry.
