BARCELONA: World champion Fernando Alonso of Renault triumphed on home soil here on Sunday, winning the Spanish Grand Prix ahead of Ferrari's Michael Schumacher and teammate Giancarlo Fisichella.

Spaniard Alonso's victory stretched his lead over German seven-time world champion Schumacher in the drivers' standings to 15 points with McLaren's Kimi Raikonnen, who finished fifth, a further 12 points down.

Behind Schumacher, Alonso's Italian teammate Giancarlo Fisichella completed the podium after taking a trip across the turn three gravel mid-way through the race, holding off Brazilian Felipe Massa, in a Ferrari.

Finn Kimi Raikkonen leapt from ninth to fifth at the start and held the position through to the end in his McLaren, holding off Briton Jenson Button and Brazilian Rubens Barrichello -- both in Hondas.

German Nick Heidfeld completed the points in his BMW Sauber.

His countryman Ralf Schumacher broke his front wing during an attempt to pass his Italian Toyota teammate Jarno Trulli on lap 16.

He was forced to pit for a replacement but additional damage caused his retirement later.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya retired when he spun, exiting turn two on lap 18 and beached his McLaren on the kerb on the inside of turn three.
