NEW DELHI: With security of Indian workers on top of the government’s agenda in Afghanistan, a fresh batch of Indo-Tibetan Border Police are going out to supplement those already deployed.

The decision to increase the number of ITBP personnel was taken soon after Maniappan Kutty’s abduction and murder last year. The numbers were agreed on after consultations between the Hamid Karzai government and Indian security officials.

The review took place after the Border Roads Organisation worker’s  beheaded body was recovered. However the ITBP could not send in the required numbers at that time. But now the commando’s are available.

Around 300 ITBP men will be deployed in the country, which is becoming increasingly dangerous for Indians. The resurgence of the Taliban, who want all Indians out of Afghanistan has made Indian citizens a prime target.
