India moots visits by vice-chiefs of army

ISLAMABAD: India has proposed reciprocal visits by Vice-Chiefs of Indian and Pakistan armies as well as officials of the National Defence Colleges to promote understanding and interaction between the armed forces of the two countries.

In his interaction with the media at the English Speaking Union in Lahore yesterday, Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Shivshankar Menon said engagement between the armies of the two countries could promote understanding.

A proposal has been extended for the reciprocal visits by Vice Chiefs of armies as well as officials of the NDC of the two sides to promote interaction, he said.

"Let the armies (of the both countries) sit and talk.The armies have resolved many issues only after sitting together. The ceasefire agreement worked well because we had consultations," Menon was quoted as saying in the Dawn today.

In his address, Menon identified the ceasefire agreement as one of the major achievement of the peace process between the two countries. The other was restoring air, rail and road transport links.
