BHOPAL: This could be one of the worst ignominy for the MP police in recent times. Six of the eight traders abducted by the Gadaria dacoit gang were released against a fat ransom on Sunday evening while two are still in the gang's custody.
Authoritative sources said that the dacoit is asking for Rs30-35 lakh to release 15-year old Hitendra Jain, son of Jain Roadways owner Ashok Jain and Rs15 lakh from Manish Agarwal of Rajgarh.
The abducted persons were travelling in the Jain Roadways bus to Sheopur on Rajasthan border when the bus was stopped and the passengers abducted. The bandits later torched the bus in the Nauni valley.
In all, Rs22 lakh are said to have been paid to the dacoits by the kin of the six abducted traders. The traders were from Indore, Shivpuri, Rajgarh and other places in MP.
Curiously, despite Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan's `stern' warning to the cops to nab the dreaded Gadaria dacoit gang-active in the Chambal area for many years now-the police could do little. Lakhs of rupees have been spent in combing operations, but as usual the gang manages to hoodwink the police.
The police have neither denied nor confirmed that ransom has been paid.
“We really don't have much to say about the incident'' admitted a senior police official while talking to DNA from Gwalior, adding, ”It's a fact that Gadaria gang is just beyond the police reach''.
In October 2004, the same gang had gunned down 13 persons of Gujar community near Gwalior in the morning.
Last month, Guna Member of Parliament Jyotiraditya Scindia had rushed to Bhopal to meet the CM. He had offered to get central assistance to solve the menace that has kept the people on the tenterhooks.
