NEW DELHI: The man who triggered the telecom revolution in the country, Sam Pitroda, on Wednesday said the biggest challenge for him at the moment is to set up an internet backbone in the country with so many optic fibres lying unused.
Stating that cost is not an impediment, Pitroda, who is the Knowledge Commission Chairman said the country should be connected with broadband to widen the knowledge base and information should be made more accessible to help the young innovate and excel.
"This would empower people with knowledge,'' he said while giving away the Reliance's Second Mobile Developers Awards.
"We need good education for all, which gives everyone a fair opportunity, and the country should be connected with broadband so that people can be empowered with knowledge and information that can be of use,'' Pitroda said.
Pitroda said ''There is poverty in the mind, there is no poverty of resources.'' He said that there is a need to explore more opportunities for the socio-economically backward classes as the reservation policy has not shown any great results in the last so many decades.
"There can be opportunities created at the elementary education stage which can be backed by scholarships for higher education to help the economically backward people go ahead in life,'' Pitroda said.
On whether reservation was the only solution, Pitroda said the matters should be viewed in a broader perspective and the aim should be to give fair opportunity to all.
On the younger generation, Pitroda said that there are so many innovations waiting to happen by encouraging the younger generation.
