More violence in Vadodara

Stray incidents of violence continued in Vadodara on the third night. While the army staged a flag march in the disturbed areas of the walled city, rioters played havoc in other parts.

VADODARA: Stray incidents of violence continued in Vadodara on the third night. While the army staged a flag march in the disturbed areas of the walled city, rioters played havoc in other parts.
 
Late at night police opened fire on a mob that was pelting stones at a Sai Baba temple in Kevdabag in Navapura. Another mob attacked an oil mill in the area. Police had to lob tear-gas shells and fire three rounds to control it.
 
Later, a steel rolling unit at the Narsinh Estate on the sensitive Dabhoi Road came under attack. Residents of different localities have started maintaining vigil in the night fearing attack by mobs.
 
Earlier, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi requested the Centre to send the army after just two nights of rioting, in stark contrast to his refusal to do so during the 2002 riots. In all, 15,000 army and paramilitary personnel were patrolling areas affected by violence.
 
Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil discussed the situation with Modi early on Wednesday after violence escalated late on Tuesday with a 35-year-old man being burnt alive on Ajwa Road.
 
Police told DNA that six superintendents from various districts had been deployed in Vadodara, each heading a police station in areas flagged as disturbed. Local authorities have also summoned police officers who have previously served in Vadodara. Union Home Secretary VK Duggal said the Centre has asked for a detailed report on the violence.
