MUMBAI: He was not anxious. He looked very confident and relaxed. He shook my hand and absorbed everything I was telling him about his condition,'' said general surgeon Dr Sunil Sharma of the first time he met Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Pramod Mahajan on the morning of April 23, the second day of hospitalisation.

Dr Sharma, attached to the University of Pittsburgh,, United States, is a multi-organ transplant expert and has trained in trauma care.

He was called in by the Mahajan family for evaluation of his condition.

Dr Sharma told DNA there was a big difference between the first and second time he saw Mahajan.

“On April 23, he was Pramod Mahajan. He was fully conscious and alert. Though he could not speak because of intubation (tube placed into trachea), he listened and nodded for all the 15 minutes I was with him.

That was very important, says Dr Sharma. Liver transplant was never an option, he clarified.
