MUMBAI: If the powers that be in Mumbai’s cricketing circles are to be believed, then the team’s only problem during the 2005-06 season was the batting. To rectify that fault, Mumbai Cricket Association’s Cricket Improvement Committee appointed former India cricketer Praveen Amre as the batting coach for the coming Ranji season.

The committee, which met on Wednesday to nominate the various selection panels and coaches for the senior as well as junior teams, also decided to continue with Karsan Ghavri as coach of the senior team. This time, though, Ghavri’s set of responsibilities will be very different from last season.

The CIC, which was chaired by honorary secretary of the MCA Lalchand Rajput, also decided to retain the senior selection committee of Milind Rege (Chairman), Sanjay Patil, Umesh Kulkarni and Abey Kuruvilla.

Only two Mumbai batsmen, Wasim Jaffer and Amol Muzumdar, scored centuries during the 2005-06 season. With Jaffer looking to make his place in the Indian team a certainty, the CIC was worried.

“During last season, several batsmen made forties and fifties but no one went on to make the big score that the team needed, hence we have opted for Amre this season,” said Rajput.

The committee is hoping that Amre will be able to travel with the team. “It is not a consultancy job. We expect him to be with the team. The details of the contract will be discussed at a later date,” Rajput added.

No other names were considered by the CIC for the coach’s job but K Jayantilal (who played one match for India) and former Maharashtra player Sandeep Dahad applied for the job.
