NEW DELHI: The UPA government is likely to get a better grip over the `autonomous’ Prasar Bharati as the new CEO of the public broadcaster may not be selected by the empowered committee headed by the Vice-President of India.

Instead of a regular CEO, an ad hoc chief executive may be appointed at Prasar Bharati in June, it is learnt.

The buzz in government circles is that after his retirement in June, Prasar Bharati CEO KS Sarma, a 1968 batch IAS officer, may be replaced by the additional secretary in the information & broadcasting (I&B) ministry.

At present, Pradeep Singh holds the portfolio of additional secretary in I&B. In all likelihood, the additional secretary would hold the temporary dual charge of Prasar Bharati CEO as well, it is reliably learnt. Any of the Prasar Bharati board members could also be given charge of the pubcaster’s CEO.

Although the empowered search committee headed by the Vice-President of India appoints the Prasar Bharati CEO, this time the UPA government may opt for the shorter route of giving dual charge to the I&B additional secretary.

Besides doing away with the lengthy process of appointment of the CEO, political leaning of the empowered committee is also being cited as a reason for the UPA government opting for an ad-hoc CEO.

The empowered selection committee is being headed by Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

However, another name doing the rounds for the post of Prasar Bharati CEO is that of sports secretary S Y Qureshi, who was earlier the director general of Doordarshan. But, this option will be possible only if the empowered committee selects the CEO.
