Indian airlines staff call off strike plans

NEW DELHI: The strike call by employees of Indian (earlier Indian Airlines) has been withdrawn following the appointment of a committee to look into their grievances.
  
The move follows a meeting between airline chairman and managing director Vishwapati Trivedi and representatives of the Air Corporations Employees Union.
  
''The ACEU has withdrawn its call for an all-India strike on May 8 and has suspended all agitational action,'' said an official statement issued by Indian.
  
In a letter to Trivedi, the ACEU expressed gratitude to him for showing genuine interest in resolving all outstanding issues.

 

The union is the largest in Indian Airlines Ltd and represents nearly 14,000 employees.

 

After holding demonstrations across the country last week, the employees had threatened to go on an indefinite strike from next week. One of the main demands of the employees is wage revision, which they allege has not been done since 1997.

 

The ACEU represents 99 per cent of the workforce in frontline areas of Indian, representing commercial, traffic, ticketing, reservations, airport, tarmac and cargo including cabin crew.
