Cops dilly-dally over assault

It took the police more than three hours to take action in a case where a DNA photographer was assaulted by men of a construction firm at Juhu.

DNA lensman assaulted by men from construction company
 
MUMBAI: It took the police more than three hours to take action in the case where a photographer working with the DNA was assaulted by men affiliated to a construction company at Juhu on Monday.
 
Lensman Satish Bate was on an assignment to cover large-scale demolitions being carried out at Unity Compound near Juhu beach. He reached the spot at 3pm.
 
The moment he took a picture of a bulldozer in action, seven to eight people arrived and started assaulting him. He was forcibly taken to the construction site office, where the men removed the image storage card from his digital camera.
 
The police control room was called, which in passed it on to Santa Cruz police station at 26493149.
 
The officer on duty listened for five minutes, but abruptly disconnected. On calling a third time, he curtly said Bate would have to come to the police station and lodge a complaint.
 
At 4pm, Zonal Deputy Commissioner Amitabh Gupta promised quick action. After ten minutes, senior inspector in-charge of Santa Cruz police station Kishore Patil called Bate over to the police station.
 
Finally, at 5pm, an accused was brought to the police station. Recording of Bate’s statement took another half hour.
